Yucca Tips and Care

The Yucca plant is a tough houseplant that can tolerate a broad range of growing conditions. It prefers high light and will do its best there. It will tolerate low light but you'll need to make sure you water properly as it will not dry out as fast under those conditions.

In bright or high light settings, allow the top 1/3 of soil to dry out before watering well. In low-light settings indoors, allow 3/4 of the soil to dry down between waterings. When you water do not let the plant sit in a puddle that can accumulate in saucer. In low light areas this extra water will encourage rotting. Over watering will show up as foliage collapse or cane rotting, especially at the soil line.

Fertilize occasionally during the growing season and allow the plant to rest in the winter. Use a general houseplant fertilizer, using the directions on the package.

The yucca an excellent choice for areas that can have a variety of temperature ranges such as a lobby or home entry. It is also a good selection for plant groupings with cactus or when you want to achieve that Southwestern look.
